Tin can alley: the return of the Sad Man in Space
The article that I have been given is about a new film that is due to come out later this year 'spaceaman'. The article goes over the fact that the number of ‘sad astronaut’ films keeps on growing. Additionally the article covers the amount of movies produced in the past few years featuring a sad male lead/ a male character that feels sad and useless without the presence of a female, this is  becoming more common. Films like Oppenheimer, Napoleon, Barbie and Batman all have male leads that are 'sad', with films like Barbie showing the male lead as feeling useless without their female counterpart. The writer of the article highlighted that these films appear to show masculinity in crisis and states that we should be shown more films where the lead can be seen more as a role model than as a burden.

The target audience of this article are film critics and people who wish to know more about the film before it is released. The movie is based on a book called  'spaceman of bohemia' by Jaroslav Kalvar. Fans of the book would want to know opinions on the film to see if it matches the book at all.

The film mentioned in the article is called ‘Spaceman’ and will be released on Netflix.  It is about a man that has been sent to space and the emotional/psychological struggles he faces. The main cast seems to be the main character ( the space man ),his wife, a reporter and a spider. Currently we are unsure whether the spider is real or just in the spaceman’s head, this being a metaphor for his state of mind being up in space by himself. The spider creature is there to aid the spaceman and help him get out of the situation he is in. The film seems to play with emotions the most, with the two main plot points being the spaceman struggling in space and his wife being pregnant and worrying for her husbands safety.

For this brief I have been tasked to create 2 artworks in response to an article. I have 2 requirements that I have to fill:
A cmyk feature illustration that is 160mm x 120mm
A cmyk spot illustration that is 50mm x 70mm.
Both of these pieces will be editorial illustrations that will work alongside the given article, this means that I have to include the theme of the 'sadstronaut' and sad men in movies.

For colours, I decided to take them directly from the book cover for the book that the movie is based on. this helps link the theming from the article to the source.

Fun + simple = good idea?

after a conversation about my work, we found that My ideas weren't coming out clear enough and that the textures I had been using were blurring everything together making less clear what was going on. When asked about the piece, I had to explain my idea behind it, this shows that the outcome wasn't strong as people couldn't interpret it themselves. This lead me onto developing some more ideas based on previous thumbnails that people had enjoyed.
I also began to work with some fun ideas that were given to me and decided to see where I could take them.
